White Ribbon Day

Wednesday, 25 November 2009 is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The day is sponsored in Australia by the White Ribbon Foundation which aims to eliminate violence against women by promoting a culture-change on the issue. The day is an international day. however, as declared by the United Nations The symbol of the white ribbon was created by Canadian men in 1991 on the second anniversary of one man’s massacre of fourteen women in Montreal. They began the White Ribbon Campaign to urge men to speak out against violence against women.

De-facto Relationships

In the past few months, changes have been made to the Law in relation to de facto relationships. The Family Law Amendment (De Facto Financial Matters and other Measures ) Act 2008 applies to domestic partners separated after 1 March 2009. Domestic partners or couples, being de facto couples and same sex couples, separated after 1 March 2009, now have the right to have their property and maintenance issues dealt with by the Family Court under the Family Law Act, after break down of their relationships. They can also obtain orders in relation to Superannuation and spousal maintenance. For more information please contact our Family Law Department.
