'How do we care for our Parents?' - Seminar

On Thursday, 23 September to an over capacity group the presenters of the "How to Care for your Parents" Seminar entertained and informed.

The presenters were:

  • Elise Cruickshank from One Care Australia who spoke well on how to recognise the signs of when a loved one may require additional assistance and care. She looked at the transition from living at home to the different levels of aged care.
  • Martin Reilly from Eldercare Legal passionately informed and entertained on the normally drab topic of Wills, Enduring Powers of Attorney (Medical & Financial), Guardianship and VCAT's power to grant Administration or Guardianship rights to family.
  • Paul Edgar from Money Guidance provided detailed scenarios on the topic of funding of entry into Aged Care facilities, the planning required and advice on pensions and income tax for those in care.
  • Barbara George from Maroondah City Council Aged Care Services was the first presenter and received many questions on the topic of the range of services provided by Council. She also examined the role of needs assessment and care planning and the role of Council's Home and Community Care (HACC) services.

While all presenters received very positive feedback our own Martin Reilly representing Eldercare Legal  had those present asking for more after the official finishing time of 8pm. Martin Reilly answered questions relating to 'capacity issues' and the Supreme Court decision of Nicholson & Ors v Knaggs & Ors (2009) VSC 64

For any who missed out on these presentations we will be able to make available a recording of some of the sessions. If you're interested please contact Jen Sinclair of this office.
