A new carbon price claims hotline

ACCC recently launched a carbon price claims hotline, which can accommodate complaints from consumers about businesses increasing the price of goods and services provided by them, claiming it to be a result of the new carbon tax. With the new carbon tax coming into operation in July this year, it is expected that there will be an increase in the price of certain goods and services. However, it is fair for a consumer to question if these price increases are truthful and have a reasonable basis. Businesses could put forward price claims that are false and misleading. These price claims may be advertised on TV or radio, on websites, product labels or catalogues. Generally businesses have the freedom to set the prices for their goods and services. However, any price claims made by them should be done in good faith and be reasonable. If consumers feel that they are being misled by false price claims, they should complain to the ACCC. ACCC has the power to act as the 'watchdog' of carbon price claims and could investigate on complaints of false or misleading price claims and take action against any party that contravenes the Australian Consumer Law.
