How much is that doggie in the window?

When Bob Merrill wrote the song "how much is that doggie in the window" I wonder if he thought the shop owner would include registration fees, microchipping and registration tags into the price.  

A lot of people would be unaware the Domestic Animals Act 1994 (Vic) now requires the owners of a dog or cat to register that dog or cat with their Council if the animal is over 3 months old. If the owner fails to register the cat or dog then fines will apply. Registrations are yearly and must be renewed each year. According to Maroondah Council, registration for dogs currently range from $29-24 and $23-18 for cats depending on the type of microchip.  

Animals must also wear a registration tag at all times so that it is clear that they have been registered with the relevant body. Fines also apply for owners who are caught with an animal not wearing a registration tag.  Under the Domestic Animals Act 1994 (Vic) Councils also have the power to refuse to register animals which have not been desexed. Desexed animals cannot reproduce and are found to be less dangerous than animals, which have not been desexed. Councils may still register an animal, which has not been desexed but will do so at a higher price.  

According the Maroondah Council website, the Council's animal management staff are currently undertaking door-knocks throughout Maroondah to check the registration of dogs and cats. Officers will be in uniform and will be carrying Council identification. Where unregistered animals are found, a Notice to Comply will be issued that allows 14 days for registration. When owners are not home an information pack including a Notice to Comply will be left.  

Therefore it is vital that dog and cat owners are responsible owners and have their animal registered with the relevant local authority to ensure they avoid being handed a fine.
